Measuring the amount of power that you intend to use determines how large your batteries are going to be. This takes a little bit of work. The basic rule of thumb is Watts = Volts x Amps so begin with this formula and begin adding up volts and amps of everything you would like to run on solar for a grand total.

The solar panels will determine by the number of amp hours that you will use in 24 hours during sunlight. Estimated at 6 hours of total sunlight hours, take 1/6 of an amp times the 14 volt panel. The answer is 2.33 watts, but now you’ll round that up to 3 watts. You need a 14 volt, 3 watt panel to generate one amp of power to power your pond pump.

Now that you have your power stored in your batteries, the DC needs to be converted to AC in order to power your electrical products. An inverter comes in different sizes and many options. Knowing When It Is Time To Move Off-Grid

A stand-alone off-grid system is any type of renewable electricity system that is completely independent of the utility grid. Although this may sound like a dream come true, collecting all of the actual facts can help you to determine whether this is the best move for you.

Setting up an off-grid system means you are going to generate your own supply of electricity apart from the utility grid. You will no longer use the services and utility as provided by the utility grid. In case you lose electrical power due to malfunctions, you yourself will be the one to resolve it because you no longer have the access to the services provided by the utility company.

If you are counting on saving money on generating your own power, think again. Generating electricity and storing for when you need it, even on a small scale, is very expensive. Large battery banks and engine generators are commonplace with off-grid systems and the initial and long-term operating costs can be very expensive.

The battery usually costs thousands of dollars and will only last for about fifteen years in operation. Since the energy comes from the sun, there will be ore energy to store in a day that may overcharge the batteries if batteries are not large enough. To avoid this, you will need charge regulators for the battery. What will happen to the stored energy that has not been used? Moving to off-grid system will require you to move your schedules as well to be able to catch up with the peak times of the supply. All these considerations and expenses do not correspond to your goal of saving money.

Depending on renewable energy doesn’t always go as planned if you are counting on the sun or the wind. You will need a backup generator that runs on petroleum and is very noisy and smelly. Many times you will not have enough power to operate certain appliances because the power is not ‘on-demand’ when you need it.

Another thing to consider with the off-grid system is the maintenance. Since you have a stand-alone-off-grid system, it means you are independent. Therefore, you need to handle the problems by yourself. IF you want, you can request someone knowledgeable to do the maintenance for you but you have to pay additional expenses. It would be better for you to take lessons about the system and how to take care of the equipments essential for the operations.

Being independent with your electricity system is not impossible, especially if you have the capacity to be so. But if your sources are limited and you are not yet stable in handling related problems and expenses regarding the system, might as well think of it first. While you are still on the stage of learning more about the system, it is good to stay grid-tied while installing your own off-grid system so you have an available back-up when your system fails.

To those who are just starting the use of renewable fuel for daily electricity, it is best to use grid-tied system. You will not need a backup battery, your inverter is already connected to the grid, and the unconsumed energy will return to the grid. When you are ready to shoulder the costs of the off-grid system, then that’s the time you can move on. Perhaps the cost of the system is not that high anymore.

In order to get a grasp on the world’s energy crisis, you have to learn more about the renewable energysolution. To be honest, you won’t find a fast answer to this one thanks to its complexity. However, if we can just figure out a way to keep up with the technology we’re given, things would run a lot smoother.

In 2050 the energy use could be at least double of what it is today and could even go higher than that. The primary reason for this is how fast the population is growing. It could jump to nine billion from six billion by then. There could also be higher prosperity levels by then too in certain countries.

Even other countries that aren’t accustomed to using these technologies are doing so now. It’s pretty much the reason why the world is stressed and the environment is suffering.

Two prime examples of this are India and China. Both have bolstered their abilities in the automotive world, the flying arena, and even electronics. So not only will they be accumulating more fuel, they’ll be using much more electricity.

So now that you have a better understanding around today’s energy, it’s even more of a reason why renewable resources are more in need today. Obviously we’re still going to need coal and oil, but being able to get to them as our supply diminishes is becoming increasingly difficult.

So the renewable energies of solar and wind are not a slam dunk solution to this problem but can be helpful. These are only used globally for about one percent of the energy supply. By the middle of this century the experts are hoping this will increase to at least 30 percent. Many more wind turbines and solar energy systems will need to be installed to make this happen though. Also advances in technology will have to be made in this area to lower the cost of these forms of energy so that this necessary increase can happen.

Listen, we’re still going to need the fossil fuels out there in order to take advantage of the other energy that will still be needed. It’s important to understand it can’t just magically happen, and that it won’t happen quickly.

We need to however keep pushing forward increasing our use of wind power and solar power. Each one of us that does our part in this area helps to cut down the use of fossil fuels and the carbon emissions they give off. Wind and solar power are totally renewable and eco-friendly on our environment. So educate yourself now what you can do to start using wind or solar power in your life.

It used to be that living off the grid was something that only survivalists or those who just happened to live in extremely isolated areas did. If you’re interested in living off the grid and have some property in a remote location, then you’ll want to make sure you’re prepared to make this big change in your lifestyle.

If you’re building a new home on your property, then you should decide on what sort of power you want to use in your home before construction begins. Since you’re moving here to live off the grid, you should make your energy source part of your home from the ground up.

If you are going solar power you need the right amount of full sun to produce your energy needs. These solar power systems work best when pointing to the south. You want enough power to have the amount electricity you know for sure that you will be using. You will also need to heat your water and your house.

Things that Influence Output from a Wind Turbine

When you are considering installing a wind powered system for your energy needs there are certain important factors that you should bear in mind, as they influence the way your system will work. Although some people opt for solar energy sometimes wind energy is the smarter option.

Depending on the amount of wind that you experience in the area in which you live, as well as the strength of the wind, your system will produce electricity accordingly. If you enjoy high wind a lot of the year then your system will produce more electricity.

It refers to the speed of the wind and how fast it is blowing and it also means how often these big gusts of wind are taking place. The most important thing of these factors is the average speed of the wind at any given moment. The average speed will help you determine if putting up this form of energy is a good idea or not for your home.

The size of the rotor is another contributing factor. Small rotors might cost less but they are not going to be able to create and store much energy. That defeats the purpose of a wind turbine. It makes far more sense to spend the extra money and buy a rotor that is as large as you can afford as this will produce far greater energy output for your home. Your system will need to off the ground, because a system that is close to the ground might not be able to collect strong wind in order to be converted into the energy that you need. Therefore you will need to have a tower for the system. This will keep it high enough so that it will be able to collect the strong gusts of wind to change into energy. A wind that is around ten miles per hour is not going to be of much use at all. But the higher the tower, the more energy will ultimately be produced.

Although you might be considering choosing to use solar power you need to remember that those systems are dependent upon the sun. If you live in a place where there are not many days of sunshine per year that system will not be the choice you should make. Even if you do experience enough sunshine, other factors can still prevent the system from working adequately, such as clouds, rain, snow and even debris. Also, most solar systems have panels which require electricity in order to operate.

On the other hand, wind turbines require absolutely nothing more than the wind. The wind is only going to be hampered if you live up against a mount that blocks the wind entirely. Other than that the wind is usually always available and it is totally free of charge.

Many factors influence the amount of electricity that wind turbines generate and store within the system. Most of the time the system actually relies on these factors in order to put out the most energy possible. If you can meet these factors, IE, the height and size, then you can expect to have a system that will supply your energy needs in a very cost effective, environment friendly way.

To recap, wind powered systems will not require you to alter the wiring in your home at all. They are simply fitted to your house without affecting any of the wiring whatsoever.

Also, remember that you will need to have a tower installed as well and this is usually provided along with the system. For your energy needs and for the turbine to be most effective the tower will have to be fairly tall so that the system is not close to the ground. Alternative Energy – Not As New As You May Think

You hear more and more about alternative energies these days a lot of people have different ideas about just what it is. I wrote this article to try to clear things up.

One way to look at it is to consider alternative energy an alternative to “standard” energy. Since the mid-1800s standard energy has pretty much meant fossil fuels – coal, oil and natural gas.

This wasn’t always the case. In the not too distant past, sailing ships and animals powered transportation.

A windmill by a ranch house is an icon of the American west because thousands of windmills were used to provide power to pump water before electricity was available.

Early in the 20th century nearly 1/3rd of homes in Florida used solar hot water. The availability of cheap electricity in the 1940′s changed that. At one point electric companies were even giving away hot water heaters to encourage consumption.

As you consider the above and similar facts I think you can see that the dominance of fossil fuels has been very brief and very recent. As it becomes harder and more expensive to meet our energy needs with fossil fuel, we need to return to other sources.

With that background, here’s my working definition of alternative energy: energy from a source other than the burning of fossil fuels (again coal, oil and its derivatives and natural gas).

Although some people use the phrase alternative energy and renewable energy interchangeably that really isn’t the case. Well many even most forms of alternative energy are, in fact, renewable some aren’t.

Most sources of alternative energy have less environmental impact and burning fossil fuel. And most are renewable, meaning we don’t have to worry about running out of them. These considerations have led to the increased interest in exploring alternative energy today

The alternative sources people most commonly think of are solar power, wind power and hydropower. However, researchers are eagerly exploring other innovative sources as well. These include things such geothermal, biomass and tidal power.

I think we can safely expect that the use of all forms of alternative energy will increase until they become the new standard.

Alternative energy seems to be all the rage today, but a lot of people have are unsure of what it is or have different definitions. I hope this article clears things up,

One way to look at it is to consider alternative energy an alternative to “standard” energy. Since the mid-1800s standard energy has pretty much meant fossil fuels – coal, oil and natural gas.

Our current perspective blinds us to the fact that the emergence of fossil fuels as the dominant form of energy happened only recently in world history. Wind, animals and hydropower were the dominant sources of energy until the mid-19th century.

Dutch windmills are an icon of the country. Windows are also closely associated wit old ranches of the American West.

Another example of earlier uses of what we now consider alternative energy is solar hot water heating. Several progressively better and more convenient solar water heating systems were available commercially in the early 1900s. At one point nearly 1/3 of the homes in Florida use solar hot water.

Remembering these facts helps us keep things in perspective. The use of fossil fuels is more of a brief detour in energy history rather than a dominant stream. As fossil fuels become more expensive and environmental consequences become clear we actually are returning to other sources.

So for now we’ll consider alternative energy to be any source of energy that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels to create it.

However most sources of alternative energy are renewable as well as better for the environment than fossil fuel. That is why there is such interest in these types of energy these days.

When people think about alternative energy solar panels and windmills are probably the most common things that come to mind. However there are many other forms of alternative energy are ready available (for example geothermal and biomass) and researchers are exploring some entirely new possibilities

I think we can safely expect that the use of all forms of alternative energy will increase until they become the new standard.
